Downrods
The Downrod Lengths chart shows the different ceiling heights and recommended downrod size to get the best airflow. Pick your ceiling height from the chart and see the downrod length we recommend. This should place your fan at the correct height for the best airflow in your room.
For best air flow, a fan should be 7 to 9 feet above the floor.
- For safety, fan blades must be at least 7 feet from the floor.
- For low ceilings there should be at least 8 to 12 inches between the blades and the ceiling. (This isn't always feasible with very low ceilings, so try to find a fan with as much space as possible above the blades.)
- Flushmount fans are good for ceilings below 8 feet.
- Low Profile fans are designed for 8' ceilings and have a short downrod to get as much air as possible above the blades for better airflow.
- For very high ceilings (not shown on this chart), fans should be hung between 9 and 10 feet above the ground. Stronger CFM/Airflow fans are helpful for high ceilings. (Note: If fans are hung too high above the ground they can have a UFO feeling, and most importantly they won't be able to deliver good airflow to the people below.)
